Reductive Elimination of C6F5-C6F5 from Pd(II) Complexes: Influence of alpha-Dicationic Chelating Phosphines

We report the synthesis and characterization through NMR and X-ray techniques of a series of [Pd(C6F5)2(PP?)] complexes constituted by diphosphine chelating ligands of different nature and evaluate the rates for the challenging reductive elimination of C6F5-C6F5. By virtue of their very weak donor properties, dicationic ancillary ligands effectively promote the desired transformation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to rationalize these findings. The Pd(0)-complexes formed after the elimination step could not be isolated because the Pd(0) center has a tremendous tendency to insert into one of the P-C+ bonds of the alpha-cationic ligands rendering Pd(II)-phosphinidene complexes. The same behavior was observed for Ni(0) species.

Carbazole degradation by Pseudomonas sp. LD2: Metabolic characteristics and the identification of some metabolites

A carbazole-degrading bacterium was isolated by enrichment from a creosote-contaminated soil. This organism, designated Pseudomonas sp. LD2, utilized carbazole as a sole source of carbon, nitrogen, and energy. When isolate LD2 was grown in nitrogen-free mineral medium with 14C-labeled carbazole, 43% was recovered as 14CO2 after 3 days of incubation. Numerous aromatic and heterocyclic compounds were tested as growth substrates for isolate LD2, but few supported the growth of this bacterium. Anthranilic acid and catechol served as growth substrates and were positively identified as intermediates of carbazole degradation by isolate LD2. In addition, 10 nitrogen-containing metabolites were observed in acidified extracts of LD2 culture supernatants, four of which were unequivocally identified. These included indole-3-acetic acid, 5-(2-aminophenyl)-5-oxopentanoic acid, and the cyclized products of 5-(2-aminophenyl)-5-oxopent-3-enoic acid and 6-(2- aminophenyl)-2-hydroxy-6-oxohexa-2,4-dienoic acid.

Active-alkali metal-promoted reductive cleavage of chlorinated phenols

We investigated the degradation of chlorinated phenols under reductive electron transfer reaction conditions. Although Li and Na metal proved useless, activated forms of these metals, either their soluble naphthalene radical anions or 1,2-diarylethane dianions, promoted the degradation of the starting materials to various extents. Additionally, efficient dehalogenation of the sodium salts of several mono-, di-, and tri-chlorophenols was obtained by their reduction with an excess of Na metal and a catalytic amount of naphthalene. Complexing and catalytic properties of easily available chiral iminophosphite based on biphenyl-2,2?-diol

A chiral iminophosphite ligand based on biphenyl-2,2?-diol and its chelates with rhodium(I) and palladium(II) were synthesized for the first time. Successful use of these compounds in asymmetric allylic substitution was demonstrated. The enantioselectivity of palladium-catalyzed alkylation of methyl pent-3-en-2-yl carbonate with dimethyl malonate reached 70%, that in the alkylation of 1,3-diphenylallyl acetate with dimethyl malonate was 88%. In the rhodium-catalyzed sulfonylation of 1,3-diphenylallyl acetate with sodium p-toluenesulfinite, the enantioselectivity was 56%.

Synthesis, structural characterization and anti-carcinogenic activity of new cyclotriphosphazenes containing dioxybiphenyl and chalcone groups

2,2-Dichloro-4,4,6,6-bis[spiro(2?,2?-dioxy-1?,1?-biphenylyl]cyclotriphosphazene (2) was synthesized from hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 2,2?-dihydroxybiphenyl. The mixed substituent chalcone/dioxybiphenyl cyclophosphazenes (2a-h) were obtained from the reactions of (2) with hydroxy chalcone compounds in K2CO3/acetone system. The chalcone-cyclophosphazene compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H, 13C, 31P NMR techniques. In vitro anti-carcinogenic activities of all compounds were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Anti-carcinogenic activity of the compounds (2a-h) against androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and independent (PC-3) human prostate cancer cell lines were investigated. Our results indicate that the chalcone-phosphazene compounds (2a-h) have anti-carcinogenic activity on PC-3 and LNCaP cell lines (p < 0.05).
