Sodium thiocyanate reacts in THF solution with 18-crown-6 to give the molecular compound Na(18-crown-6)(THF)NCS (3) with the N atom of the NCS anion oriented towards Na1+. The same reaction with 15-crown-5 yields the ion pair Na(15-crown-5)NCS (4). In contrast, Na(NCS)(py)4, obtained by treating a solution of Na(H3BNCS) in THF with pyridine, yields Na(py)4(NCS) (5), which has a chain structure with hexacoordinate Na atoms coordinated to five N atoms and an S atom. Na(NCS) in THF adds 1 equiv. of BH3 to give Na(H3BNCS)*nTHF. Addition of 18-crown-6 to this solution yields crystals of the salt [Na(18-crown-6)(THF)2][H3BNCS] (1), as shown by X-ray crystallography. Both the cation and the anion show site disorder. However, when 15-crown-5 is used for complexation, the salt [Na(15-crown-5)(THF)][H3BNCS] (2) can be isolated. Its anion shows an almost linear B-N-C-S unit. Only a mixture of (catecholato)(isothiocyanato)borates results on treating Na(NCS) in THF with catecholborane. However, the borate Na[catB(NCS)2] is readily formed by adding Na(NCS) to B-(isothiocyanato)catecholborane. Single crystals of this compound were obtained as the salt [Na(18-crown-6)(THF)2][catB(NCS)2] (6). On the other hand, the reaction of Na(NCS) with 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) in THF yields Na[(9-BBN)NCS]*nTHF, and, on addition of 18-crown-6, the complex [Na(18-crown-6)(THF)2][(9-BBN)NCS] was isolated. Suitable crystal for X-ray structure determination were, however, only obtained by crystallization from tetrahydropyran. This solvate has the rather unusual structure [Na(18-crown-6)(thp)2][{(9-BBN)NC}2Na(thp)4] (8). The sodiate anion has an Na atom coordinated by two S and four O atoms. DFT calculations support these experimental results: The (isothiocyanato)borates are more stable than the thiocyanato isomers. For the latter a bent structure of the B-S-C-N unit with a B-S-C bond angle of 105.7 deg is predicted.

Cobalt(II) complexes with a series of as many as sixteen SALEN type of quadridentate ligands derived by condensing substituted carbonyls and different diamines have been synthesized and characterized by IR, 1N NMR, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurements and electronic spectral data. Subnormal magnetic moment values infer the presence of dimeric structure for the present complexes. However, electronic spectral data suggest a square planar structure in solution, possibly due to the monomeric structure. Infrared spectral data suggest the bonding of ligands through two ortho phenolic oxygen and two azomethine nitrogen atoms. The electrochemical behaviour of these complexes has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. Additional phenolic groups present in these complexes are useful for the facile synthesis of polymer supported cobalt complexes.

The apparent molar volumes and adiabatic compressibilities of 18-Crown-6, 15-Crown-5, 12-Crown-4, tetraglyme, and triglyme were measured at 25C in H2O and D2O. The contribution of the -CH2CH2O- group to the limiting partial molar volumes and compressibilities of cyclic and open-chain ethers in both solvents are compared and solvent isotope effects calculated. It is concluded, based on the compressibility results, that there is a subtle difference between the hydration of the ethene oxide group in cyclic and open-chain ethers and that this difference persists in D2O. These results indicate that the calculation of limiting apparent molar compressibilities using additivity schemes will have to account for whether the group is in a cyclic or open-chain compound.

The reaction of a slurry of BaBr2 in a minimal amount of tetrahydrofuran (THF) with 2 equiv of Na(H3BNMe2BH 3) in diethyl ether followed by crystallization from diethyl ether at -20 C yields crystals of Ba(H3BNMe2BH 3)2(Et2O)2 (1). Drying 1 at room temperature under vacuum gives the partially desolvated analogue Ba(H 3BNMe2BH3)2(Et2O) x (1?) as a free-flowing white solid, where the value of x varies from <0.1 to about 0.4 depending on whether desolvation is carried out with or without heating. The reaction of 1 or 1? with Lewis bases that bind more strongly to barium than diethyl ether results in the formation of new complexes Ba(H3BNMe2BH3)2(L), where L = 1,2-dimethoxyethane (2), N,N,N?,N?-tetramethylethylenediamine (3), 12-crown-4 (4), 18-crown-6 (5), N,N,N?,N?- tetraethylethylenediamine (6), and N,N,N?,N?,N?- pentamethylethylenetriamine (7). Recrystallization of 4 and 5 from THF affords the related compounds Ba(H3BNMe2BH3) 2(12-crown-4)(THF) ·THF (4?) and Ba(H 3BNMe2BH3)2(18-crown-6) ·2THF (5?). In addition, the reaction of BaBr2 with 2 equiv of Na(H3BNMe2BH3) in the presence of diglyme yields Ba(H3BNMe2BH3)2(diglyme) 2 (8), and the reaction of 1 with 15-crown-5 affords the diadduct [Ba(15-crown-5)2][H3BNMe2BH3] 2 (9). Finally, the reaction of BaBr2 with Na(H 3BNMe2BH3) in THF, followed by the addition of 12-crown-4, affords the unusual salt [Na(12-crown-4)2][Ba(H 3BNMe2BH3)3(THF)2] (10). All of these complexes have been characterized by IR and 1H and 11B NMR spectroscopy, and the structures of compounds 1-3, 4?, 5?, and 6-10 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. As the steric demand of the Lewis bases increases, the structure changes from polymers to dimers to monomers and then to charge-separated species. Despite the fact that several of the barium complexes are monomeric in the solid state, none is appreciably volatile up to 200 C at 10-2 Torr. Interested yet? An improved method for the synthesis of formyl derivatives of N – Methylbenzoazacrown ethers is proposed. They are prepared in up to 68% yields over fewer steps and with a much shorter time required for the last step. The stability constants of complexes formed by N-methylbenzoazacrown ethers and their structural analogs with alkali metal, alkaline – Earth metal and ammonium cations were determined by 1H NMR titration in CD3CN. High stability of complexes of N-methyl derivatives of benzoazacrown ethers is demonstrated, comparable with or even exceeding the stability of benzocrown-ether complexes and markedly exceeding the stability of complexes of phenylazacrown ethers with the same macrocycle size. The structures of azacrown ethers and their complexes with Ba(ClO4)2 were studied by X-ray diffraction. A high degree of pre-organization of N – Methylbenzoazacrown ethers toward the formation of complexes with metal and ammonium cations was noted, which is due to the clear-cut pyramidal geometry of the nitrogen atom and the orientation of the lone electron pairs (LEPs) of most heteroatoms towards the centre of the macroheterocycle.
